AfD won the state election in Thuringia and finished a close second in Saxony

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) has demanded that other political parties cooperate with them to form a coalition after securing a historic victory in the Thuringia state election. Mainstream politicians have reacted with alarm, and anti-AfD protests have begun to break out in cities including Cologne.

Not moving quickly right now, but still current and open to further updates.

What we don't know

Open questions are tracked here until evidence answers them. The Truism never fills a gap with an assumption.

  • Will any mainstream political parties break their vows and negotiate a coalition with the AfD?
  • How widespread will the anti-AfD protests become across Germany?
